Prussian Officer’s Schirmütze – Garde-Kürassier Regiment – Feldgrau with Blue Stripe and White Piping
Prussian Officer’s Schirmütze – Garde-Kürassier Regiment – Feldgrau with Blue Stripe and White Piping
This is a pristine feldgrau (field-gray) officer’s Schirmütze from the Garde-Kürassier Regiment, one of the most elite heavy cavalry units of the German Empire, particularly serving under the Kingdom of Prussia. This pre-World War I piece reflects both the tradition and the evolving military uniform of the time.
Key Features:
Color Scheme: The cap is made of feldgrau wool, the classic Prussian military shade, with a distinct blue central band encircling the cap, a feature specific to the Garde-Kürassier Regiment. The cap is further accented by white piping, which borders the cap and separates the blue stripe from the gray, offering a visually striking contrast.
Kokarden (Cockades): Both the Prussian state kokarde and the Reich kokarde are present, positioned on the front of the cap. The Prussian kokarde is set higher on the band, just above the Reich kokarde, signifying the dual loyalty to both the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire.
Visor: The visor is in superb condition, featuring a glossy black finish, free of cracks or wear, adding a fine ceremonial touch to this military piece.
Condition:
Exterior: The cap shows minimal wear, maintaining the vibrancy of the feldgrau wool and the blue band, with the white piping showing no signs of fraying. There is no evidence of moth damage or tracking, which is exceptional for a piece of this age.
Interior: Inside, the cap features a well-preserved leather sweatband and a silk liner, both in commendable condition. The liner shows some light staining consistent with age, but it remains intact and free of significant damage. The overall integrity of the cap’s interior speaks to the care it has received over the years.
This officer’s Schirmütze is a fine representation of the ceremonial headgear worn by elite officers of the Garde-Kürassier Regiment. The Garde-Kürassier Regiment played an important role in Prussian ceremonial functions, often serving as personal guards to the Kaiser during official state events. They were also noted for their heavy cavalry duties in earlier military engagements.
This stunning Schirmütze would make an excellent addition to any collection focused on Imperial German military regalia, particularly for those with an interest in cavalry or ceremonial uniforms. It stands as a testament to the skillful craftsmanship of Prussian military attire and offers a glimpse into the pomp and pageantry of the pre-World War I German Empire.
