Offered here is a fine example of the War Merit Cross (Kriegsverdienstkreuz) from the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, a seldom-encountered decoration from one of Imperial Germany’s smaller states. Instituted in January 1915 by Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst, this cross recognized both military and civil contributions to the German war effort during the First World War.

The cross is struck in gilded bronze with excellent definition and retains much of its original luster. The obverse bears the inscription “Für Auszeichnung im Kriege” (“For Merit in War”), framed by the bold arms of the cross. The reverse features the crowned cipher “WE” (for Wilhelm Ernst) above the date 1914, denoting the year of Germany’s entry into the war.

It is suspended from its correct light blue ribbon with yellow and red edge stripes, characteristic of Saxe-Weimar decorations. The ribbon shows light age toning and fold wear but remains complete and original to the piece.

This decoration was awarded sparingly compared to those of Prussia or Bavaria, as Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach was a small state with a limited contingent of troops. Surviving examples, particularly with their original ribbons intact, are prized by collectors seeking to build a comprehensive representation of the German states in WWI.

Condition:

  • Cross: Excellent, with original gilding intact and crisp detail throughout.

  • Ribbon: Original, light soiling and crease wear, very good overall.
