The Friedrich August Medal was instituted on 23 April 1905 by King Friedrich August III of Saxony as an award for merit in both civil and military spheres. This example is the silver grade, awarded during the First World War, and features the crossed swords device signifying wartime issue.
The obverse displays the crowned royal monogram “FA” for Friedrich August within a beaded border. The reverse bears the inscription Für Verdienst (“For Merit”) within a finely detailed laurel wreath, symbolizing honor and achievement. The medal retains its original yellow, red, and black Saxon ribbon, mounted with the correct crossed-swords suspension for military merit awards.
Condition is excellent, with crisp details to both sides of the medal and a pleasing, lightly toned silver patina. The ribbon remains clean and retains strong color, showing only minor wear from age.
A fine and complete example of a World War I Saxon silver Friedrich August Medal with original ribbon—an essential addition to any Imperial German award collection
