This is the Saxon Kriegsverdienstmedaille (War Merit Medal), instituted on 30 October 1915 by King Friedrich August III of Saxony. It was awarded to recognize noteworthy contributions to the war effort during the First World War, both for combat and non-combat service.
-
Obverse: Features a crowned monogram “B” (for King Friedrich August III, “B” referencing his family line, Wettin Branch Albertine). The central cross design is surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves, symbolizing strength and endurance.
-
Reverse: Displays the Saxon arms within a cross, encircled by the inscription “Für Verdienst im Kriege 1914/15” (“For Merit in War 1914/15”).
-
Ribbon: Original ribbon in yellow with central green-black stripe and green checkered edges, showing period wear and fraying at the top, consistent with age.
-
Material: Struck in bronze.
-
Condition: Very fine, with an attractive age patina. Medal details remain crisp and fully legible. Ribbon shows honest wear but is complete.
A desirable Saxon WWI decoration, representing one of the smaller German states' wartime issues.
