This is an original hand-molded German stoneware beer stein from the late 19th to early 20th century, featuring rich relief decoration and classic folk motifs from the Imperial German period. This stein is not a regimental example, but rather a civilian tavern-style piece that captures the humor and romance of everyday German life.

The stein stands approximately 7.25 inches tall and is crafted in salt-glazed stoneware, a traditional method typical of Westerwald production. The body displays deeply molded scenes in high relief, depicting humorous rustic courtship imagery under the German proverb: “Was sich liebt das neckt sich” — “Those who love, tease.”

Each panel around the stein portrays a different moment of interaction between young couples, from flirtatious arguments to gentle mockery, reinforcing the theme of playful affection. A central panel shows a jovial tavern scene with men and women laughing around a table, a small dog included in the merriment — adding both realism and warmth.

The deep cobalt blue and reddish-brown glaze framing the cream relief figures is typical of Westerwald color palettes. A band of molded floral decoration separates the scenes and enhances the overall aesthetic. The handle is plain but sturdy, typical for drinking vessels designed for regular use.

The underside is unglazed and shows the original turning marks, with a faint impressed mark partially readable — possibly indicating a regional Westerwald workshop, though the exact maker is not confirmed. The lip bears faint crazing in the glaze, consistent with natural aging and handling over more than a century.

Condition: Excellent overall. No cracks or repairs noted. Minor glaze wear and natural age patina are present. A fine, authentic example of civilian German stoneware — ideal for collectors of pre-WWI beer culture, folk ceramics, or anyone seeking to add character to their collection with a humorously themed piece.

Display suggestions: This stein displays beautifully in a bar, on a collector’s shelf alongside military steins for contrast, or within a themed German tavern vignette. It also makes an engaging gift for beer enthusiasts or anyone charmed by antique European craftsmanship.
