This is a fine example of a mid-to-late 19th century mourning brooch, a sentimental keepsake once commonly worn to remember a loved one. The brooch is octagonal in shape, crafted from a gold-toned metal with beveled edges and an inset panel of beveled crystal glass. Beneath the glass lies a carefully arranged lock of light brown hair, looped in a tight oval pattern and mounted on a dark woven fabric background — a hallmark of period hairwork artistry.

The reverse features a simple flat back plate with a period “C” clasp pin mechanism, showing appropriate age patina. The brooch’s design and materials suggest it dates from the 1850–1880 period, aligning with Victorian mourning traditions following the death of Prince Albert, when such personal mementos became especially fashionable.

Hair jewelry like this was often commissioned by family members after the passing of a loved one, serving both as a physical reminder and as a deeply personal mourning emblem. The quality of the arrangement, along with the intact crystal and original clasp, indicates this piece was well-preserved over the last century and a half.

Dimensions: Approximately 1.25 in x 1 in (3.2 cm x 2.5 cm)
Condition: Excellent for its age; minor surface wear and age patina to metal, hairwork intact and glass free from chips or cracks. Pin mechanism is functional.
