This striking vintage metal ashtray features a powerful, dimensional spread-winged eagle perched at the rear of the base—an emblem commonly associated with strength, authority, and German imperial symbolism. Cast from what appears to be pot metal or spelter with a darker silvered or pewter finish, the eagle displays sharp, lifelike feather details and talons gripping a raised platform. The base of the ashtray is elegantly contoured with scalloped corners and smooth, integrated grooves for resting cigarettes or small cigars. A beaded arc design adds a decorative flair across the back portion of the tray.
This piece likely dates from the WWI era through the 1920s–1930s and could have served either as an officer’s personal desk item or as a commemorative or patriotic home accessory in Imperial or Weimar Germany. While not explicitly marked, its style and construction are consistent with German-made militaria or souvenir items of the period. The reverse side shows wear typical of early 20th-century casting with a simple screw affixing the eagle to the base.
Historical Significance:
The eagle motif has long held a central role in German heraldry—from the Holy Roman Empire to the Kaiserreich. The strong vertical posture and forward-reaching wings suggest a possible link to either the Imperial German military (Preußischer Adler) or post-imperial patriotic themes. Though not specifically marked with military insignia, such pieces were often kept by veterans or displayed in patriotic households.
Condition:
Very good for age. Minor oxidation and patina on the base and eagle, consistent with uncleaned vintage metal. The eagle is securely attached. Some surface wear in the tray area as expected from use. No significant dents or structural damage.
Measurements:
-
Height (to eagle's wing): approx. 4.25 in / 10.8 cm
-
Width of base: approx. 5.5 in / 14 cm
-
Depth (front to back): approx. 4.25 in / 10.8 cm
Collector Appeal & Display:
This ashtray will appeal to militaria collectors, German Empire enthusiasts, and those interested in WWI-era trench art and commemorative items. Its decorative flair and historical undertone make it suitable for display in war room collections, studies, or military offices. It can also complement smoking-related displays or early 20th-century desk accessory themes.
