This striking wall-mounted weather station is a beautiful and functional artifact crafted from an authentic segment of a German aircraft propeller—most likely from a World War I-era wooden biplane. The elegant curvature of the laminated wood, reinforced with a brass leading edge, strongly suggests its origin from a propeller tip. The rich wood grain remains vibrant, having aged gracefully with decades of patina and subtle wear from long-term handling or display.
Mounted on this propeller segment are two fully functional instruments:
- A barometer, signed “Original Flugzeugpropeller,” with full German-language readings such as Sturm, Regen, Veränderlich, Schön Wetter, and Beständig—classic meteorological terms from the early 20th century.
- A thermometer, encased in brass and mounted below the barometer, offering temperature in Celsius with excellent legibility. This is cracked and does not work but could easily be replaced by collector.
The reverse side reveals an inset black plate likely used for securing or balancing the propeller when in flight, further confirming its aviation provenance. Additionally, a metal loop at the top allows for secure hanging and display.
Historical Context:
This piece would have originally belonged to a wooden-bladed propeller mounted on a reconnaissance or fighter aircraft of the Imperial German Air Service, such as an Albatros D-series or similar biplane of the 1914–1918 period. After the war, damaged or decommissioned propellers were often repurposed into clocks, barometers, or furniture—symbols of remembrance or tribute to the airmen of the Great War.
Display Suggestions:
With its sculptural form and inherent historical weight, this barometer display is ideal for wall mounting in an office, den, or collector’s gallery. It complements aviation memorabilia, WWI displays, or early 20th-century decorative arts with both authenticity and aesthetic appeal.
Provenance:
This is not a reproduction or modern decorative object—it is built on a genuine Imperial German aircraft propeller fragment, likely converted into its current form in the 1920s or 1930s. The wording “Original Flugzeugpropeller” printed directly on the barometer face affirms this.
Why Collectors Will Value This:
Original WWI German aircraft parts are increasingly rare, especially when repurposed into beautifully crafted utilitarian items like this one. It offers a tangible connection to early military aviation and the craftsmanship of Imperial Germany’s wartime engineering, all while remaining a functional decorative piece.
Condition: Excellent overall, with mild surface wear consistent with age. Fully intact instrumentation and original hardware.
