SKU: 19-19
This postcard features Leutnant Werner Voss, one of Imperial Germany’s most celebrated fighter pilots during World War I. Voss, born on April 13, 1897, in Krefeld, Germany, is remembered as one of the greatest aces of the war, second only to Manfred von Richthofen, “The Red Baron,” in reputation and skill.
Voss became renowned for his extraordinary flying ability, charisma, and daring nature. Initially serving in the cavalry, he transferred to the Imperial German Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte) in 1916, where his career as a pilot flourished. By the time of his untimely death in September 1917, he had been credited with 48 confirmed aerial victories, earning himself the Pour le Mérite (Blue Max) – Imperial Germany’s highest military honor for bravery.
This striking postcard shows a formal portrait of Voss in uniform, exuding confidence and composure. Visible are the decorations he proudly wore, including the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class and the Pour le Mérite, prominently displayed at his throat. The postcard is signed "Werner Voss," adding a rare and personal touch for collectors of WWI aviation memorabilia.
Voss’ career culminated in a legendary final dogfight on September 23, 1917, against multiple British aces from the Royal Flying Corps' No. 56 Squadron. Flying his Fokker Dr.I Triplane, Voss single-handedly engaged seven SE5a pilots, including aces James McCudden and Arthur Rhys-Davids. Despite his masterful maneuvers and extraordinary skills, he was ultimately shot down. His courage and flying prowess left an enduring legacy, even among his adversaries.
This autographed postcard is a poignant tribute to a pilot who epitomized gallantry and skill during the Great War. It holds significant value for collectors of WWI aviation, German military history, and autographed artifacts.
