This prestigious award was created by Kaiser Wilhelm II to honor the memory of his grandfather and was widely distributed to military personnel and government officials of the German Empire.
Design & Features
-
Obverse: Features a detailed profile portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm I, wearing a Pickelhaube helmet. Surrounding inscriptions read:
"WILHELM DER GROSSE DEUTSCHER KAISER" (Wilhelm the Great, German Emperor) on the left, and "KÖNIG VON PREUSSEN" (King of Prussia) on the right. -
Reverse: The text reads:
"ZUM ANDENKEN AN DEN HUNDERTSTEN GEBURTSTAG DES GROSSEN KAISERS WILHELM I 1797 – 22 MÄRZ – 1897"
(In Memory of the 100th Birthday of the Great Emperor Wilhelm I, March 22, 1897).
Below, a detailed relief of the Emperor Wilhelm National Monument in Berlin is flanked by oak leaves and laurel branches, symbols of strength and victory. - Material: Struck in bronze, with a rich patina that has developed over time.
- Ribbon: Retains its original golden-yellow bow ribbon, typically awarded for wear on civilian attire. The ribbon remains in excellent condition, with only minor fraying to the stitched knot.
Condition
This example is well-preserved, with clear, legible inscriptions and strong relief on both sides. The ribbon remains vibrant, with only minor signs of age. The medal surface shows light wear consistent with age but no significant damage.
Historical Significance
The Wilhelm I Centenary Medal was awarded throughout the German Empire to military and civilian personnel alike, reinforcing national pride and reverence for the first emperor of a united Germany. As such, it holds an important place in Imperial German history and militaria collecting.
Display & Collectibility
This medal presents beautifully, especially with its original bow ribbon, which is far less common than the military-issued straight ribbon. It would make an excellent addition to any Imperial German collection, particularly for enthusiasts of Prussian memorabilia and commemorative awards.
Provenance & Authenticity
This is a genuine period piece, not a reproduction. The details, construction, and patina are consistent with known authentic examples.
