This is an excellent example of a Württemberg NCO infantry Schirmutze, the traditional visor cap worn by non-commissioned officers. This cap represents the period leading up to and during World War I.
The cap features a dark blue wool crown, with the wide red wool band running around its base, representing the infantry branch. The top of the cap also has red piping along the edge. The traditional Reich and Württemberg cockades are present, with the Reich cockade at the top center of the cap and the Württemberg cockade just above the red band. The visor is black leather with a smooth, polished finish.
The wool material of the Schirmutze is in exceptional condition, showing minimal wear. There is a small area of light mothing on one side, but this does not detract from its overall appearance. The black leather visor retains its original shape and shows only minor signs of aging, without any significant cracks or damage. The stitching is intact and solid.
Interior: The interior of the cap is lined in brown leather and silk, indicating the quality of the material used. The liner is well-preserved, and there is no significant staining or wear inside the cap.
This Schirmutze is a classic example of pre-World War I German military headgear, making it an important piece for any collection focusing on Imperial German militaria.
Historical Context: Württemberg was one of the principal states of the German Empire, and its military forces were part of the larger Imperial German Army. This cap represents the uniform style worn by NCOs in the infantry regiments of the state. Items such as this would have seen service during the Franco-Prussian War, the lead-up to World War I, and the early stages of the Great War itself.
