This unique WWI-era commemorative plaque features a hand-embroidered depiction of a German soldier in full dress uniform, rendered in fine threadwork with rich tones of Prussian blue, crimson, and black. The soldier stands proudly with a flag staff, set against a beige linen ground. Below the soldier is the clearly stitched date "1917," signifying the wartime context of the item.

The embroidery is housed in a curved blackened cast-metal frame, with textured detailing and a stylized flourish at the top right corner. At the base of the frame, the initials WHW are prominently raised in relief. WHW refers to Winterhilfswerk (Winter Relief Fund), a charitable organization active in Imperial and later Nazi Germany, originally supporting war widows and orphans during WWI.

The reverse side retains its original gray felt backing, with no major separation or warping—an unusual feature given the age. While the front shows light soiling and minor wear consistent with wartime material shortages, the stitching remains well-preserved, showcasing period craftsmanship.

Condition: Very good for age. Minor oxidation on the frame and light soiling to the linen surface. No active fraying or losses to the stitching.

Historical Significance: WHW artifacts from WWI are increasingly rare, especially those featuring detailed embroidery rather than printed or cast relief imagery. This plaque stands out as a testament to home-front morale and the artistic means by which German civilians supported the war effort.

Display Suggestions: Ideal for display in a shadow box or alongside other WHW medals, Iron Crosses, or embroidered patriotic relics of the Great War. A fine addition for collectors of Imperial German home-front memorabilia or textile-based military art.
