A remarkable piece of World War I history, this Bavarian commemorative “Box Thaler” (Schraubtaler) dates from 1914–1916 and honors the service and loyalty of Bavaria’s soldiers during the Great War. Combining the artistry of medallic design with the charm of a miniature illustrated album, it is both a collectible medal and a visual narrative of the era.
Features & Details:
-
Authentic WWI-Era Patriotica: Issued under the reign of King Ludwig III of Bavaria, the obverse of the silvered metal case features a finely detailed bust of the King surrounded by his name and title. The reverse bears the crowned Bavarian coat of arms with the motto In Treue Fest (“Steadfast in Loyalty”), the official slogan of the Kingdom of Bavaria.
-
Complete Three-Piece Set: Includes the original paperboard presentation box printed with “Bayern Thaler 1914–1916,” the silvered metal coin-like case, and the complete internal paper accordion. The case opens to reveal thirty connected chromolithograph medallions printed in vivid color and attached in a fold-out strip.
-
Richly Illustrated War Scenes: The miniature medallions depict portraits of King Ludwig III, Kaiser Wilhelm II, notable generals, Iron Cross imagery, Bavarian regimental colors, and battlefield scenes from the early years of WWI. Dedication panels read Unseren tapferen Bayern in Treue und Dankbarkeit gewidmet (“Dedicated to our brave Bavarians in loyalty and gratitude”) and Zur Erinnerung an den grossen Krieg (“In remembrance of the Great War”).
-
Quality & Craftsmanship: The case, measuring approximately 52–53 mm in diameter, is crafted from silvered bronze/brass and designed to resemble a large coin. The illustrations are fine chromolithographs, showcasing early 20th-century printing skill.
-
Condition: Excellent for its age. The metal retains strong relief detail, the case opens and closes securely, and the accordion illustrations remain vivid and complete. Minor age patina and light wear to the presentation box are present, consistent with careful storage over the past century.
Historical Significance:
These Bavarian “Box Thalers” were produced in small numbers as patriotic souvenirs during WWI. Many were treasured family keepsakes or gifted to mark special occasions during the war years. They serve as miniature time capsules, preserving the imagery, symbols, and sentiments of Bavaria’s wartime spirit.
Collector Appeal:
Highly desirable for militaria collectors, WWI historians, and enthusiasts of Bavarian heritage, this set is both a display-worthy artifact and a tangible link to the people and events of 1914–1918.
