This large dinner plate is a rare and striking example of Imperial German aviation-themed porcelain from the World War I era. Manufactured by the renowned Rosenthal porcelain factory in Selb, Bavaria, the plate is vendor-stamped in red with the mark of Franz Kreski, Bromberg, indicating its regional distribution—likely tied to a Prussian military supply chain.
The standout feature of the plate is the intricate blue transfer design at the top rim, which features a stylized early biplane—clearly modeled after a pre-1916 observation or reconnaissance aircraft—flanked by the initials "M. F. S." in Fraktur script. The plane is rendered with surprising technical fidelity, showing details such as struts, landing gear, and fuselage markings, including crosses on the wings, making this a unique commemorative or regimental piece, possibly used in a mess hall tied to a Flieger unit or aviation school.
A decorative border of repeating geometric motifs encircles the rim, lending further character to the stark white porcelain base. The plate measures approximately 9.75 inches (24.8 cm) in diameter, classifying it as a standard dinner plate in military serviceware.
Condition: Excellent overall with only light surface scratches and minor signs of use. The transfer image remains sharp and fully intact, with no cracks, chips, or hairlines noted. Glaze remains bright with only age-appropriate wear.
Historical Relevance: Plates of this nature were often produced in limited quantities for elite or specialized branches of the Imperial German military. The combination of a specific biplane motif, Fraktur lettering, and porcelain of this caliber points to military dining service from either a Flieger Ersatz Abteilung (Aviation Replacement Detachment), a Fliegerschule (aviation school), or even a support unit attached to an airbase.
Display Suggestions: This plate presents beautifully on a stand or in a shadow box, ideal for collectors focused on the Imperial German Air Service, trench art and military messware, or aviation memorabilia.
Note: The meaning of the initials "M. F. S." remains open to interpretation. They may reference a specific aviation unit, training school, or air station abbreviation in Imperial German military terminology.
