This is an authentic World War I-era German Black Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz), awarded to Imperial German soldiers wounded once or twice during combat. This example is the first grade of the badge, featuring the iconic Stahlhelm (steel helmet) over crossed swords, framed by an oak leaf wreath.
Struck in pressed steel and painted matte black, this badge retains much of its original finish with only minor surface wear and honest field patina. The reverse exhibits a vertical pinback attachment, complete with original catch and hinge — consistent with wartime manufacturing techniques. There are no visible maker's marks, a common trait among earlier or mass-issued variants.
These wound badges were instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II on March 3, 1918, and became a symbol of valor and sacrifice on the front lines. Soldiers proudly wore them on their tunics, and they continued in use—through modified forms—into the Weimar and Third Reich periods.
