A striking wartime patriotic brooch, die-cut from repurposed brass in the manner of trench-art jewelry. The central motif depicts the imperial German eagle grasping a sword and laurel branch, framed by the dates 1914 and 1916. Beneath it hangs a small, finely detailed Iron Cross charm marked “W” and “1914.” The backing shows a crosshatch texture typical of hand-worked shell brass, with a horizontal pin and C-catch still intact. Measuring approximately 44 mm wide, the piece retains its subtle silvered wash and warm period patina.
During the middle years of the Great War, patriotic jewelry flourished both on the home front and near the front lines. Soldiers and civilians alike fashioned keepsakes from salvaged shell fragments—symbols of perseverance and remembrance in the midst of hardship. The German eagle represented unity under the Empire, its sword and laurel echoing valor and victory, while the Iron Cross embodied service and sacrifice since its reintroduction by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914. Brooches like this were proudly worn by soldiers’ families and sweethearts as daily reminders of loyalty and hope amid the strain of total war.
This example remains well-preserved, showing honest age toning and gentle wear to high points, with strong relief to the eagle and crisp form to the pendant cross. A handsome and authentic example of WWI trench-art craftsmanship that captures the spirit of German patriotism between the early victories of 1914 and the stalemate of 1916.
