This is a striking portrait of a sailor from the German Torpedoboots-Abteilung (Torpedo Boat Division) during World War I. The sailor is captured in his naval uniform, complete with the clearly legible tally on his cap that reads "TORPEDOBOOTS-ABTEILUNG." This rare and historically significant photograph measures approximately 3.5" x 5.5" and is an exceptional representation of the proud naval tradition of Imperial Germany during the Great War.

The embossed studio mark, “Atelier Atlantic Hamburg,” adds authenticity and provenance to the piece. The studio was located at Hamburgerstr. 94, Hamburg, and was known for capturing formal military portraits during the early 20th century. This detail further enhances the desirability for collectors of naval or photographic memorabilia.

The reverse side features handwriting that appears to identify the sailor as "Fritz Wasserloh." Additional pencil notations, including “7663,” may provide further clues about archival or collection origins. The postcard format suggests it may have been intended for correspondence, though it remains unused, preserving its pristine condition.

Condition: Excellent. The photograph is free from major creases or tears, with only minimal age-related wear, ensuring the clarity of both the image and the embossed studio mark.

Historical Significance: This piece highlights the role of the German Torpedo Boat Division during WWI, a critical component of the Imperial Navy’s strategic operations. Torpedo boats played a significant role in naval engagements and coastal defense, and this portrait connects collectors to the sailors who manned these vessels. The personal touch of the identified sailor makes it even more unique for genealogists or naval historians.

This photograph is ideal for display in a collection of WWI naval memorabilia, framing alongside other Kriegsmarine artifacts, or as an addition to a historical research archive.
