An attractive World War I patriotic brooch crafted in gilded brass, featuring a centrally mounted Iron Cross with black enamel field and silvered edging, flanked by applied oak leaves in fine relief. The bar itself is textured to resemble a torn fragment of shell casing, a design typical of “trench-art” and home-front jewelry produced during the early years of the Great War. The reverse displays the characteristic crosshatch finish and original long pin with C-catch, fully functional and secure. Measuring approximately 45 mm across, the brooch carries the 1914 date in crisp detail below the imperial “W” cipher and crown.
Such pieces were worn widely across the German Empire as symbols of loyalty, remembrance, and shared sacrifice. The Iron Cross—revived in August 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II—quickly became the defining emblem of wartime honor. The addition of oak leaves reflected steadfastness and strength, long associated with Germanic tradition and the Prussian military ethos. Brooches like this were often purchased by soldiers’ families or distributed at patriotic fundraising events to support war charities, linking the home front emotionally to those serving at the front.
This example remains in very good condition, showing even age patina with light rubbing to the gilded surface and excellent preservation of the enamel inlay. The detailing of the oak leaves and cross remains sharp, while the pin assembly is straight and intact. A handsome, historically meaningful artifact that perfectly captures the patriotic sentiment and artistry of Imperial Germany in 1914.
