Offered here is a compact and exceptionally evocative World War I-era German trench art medal case, crafted from hand-worked brass and measuring approximately 3 x 2 x 2 inches. Despite its diminutive size, this box is rich in symbolic detail and character—clearly designed to house a treasured Iron Cross or similar decoration.
The box is constructed from pressed or hammered sheet brass with hand-soldered seams and a functional fold-over hasp lock (key not present). Its upper lid is subtly domed, and a period-correct cast brass handle adorns the top, likely shaped by a soldier-artisan from recycled shell or field scrap.
The interior features a velvet-lined base in deep golden brown, tailored to cradle a single award. Most notably, the underside of the lid is upholstered with a printed linen panel bearing the Imperial German eagle flanked by two WWI-era flags: the naval ensign of the Kaiserliche Marine (left) and the national tricolor of the German Empire (right). The crowned eagle clutches the orb and scepter, surrounded by faintly visible heraldic flourishes—an unmistakable patriotic display intended to elevate the symbolic value of the medal inside.
Condition:
Very good, with surface darkening and patina to the brass exterior consistent with age. Velvet interior shows light impressions from prior use. Hinge and clasp function properly. No cracks, repairs, or structural flaws.
Historical Note:
Handmade cases such as this were often crafted behind the lines by soldiers, support personnel, or recovering wounded—part of the larger phenomenon known as “trench art.” This particular example, with its precise size and patriotic lining, was likely made to house a 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class—perhaps awarded to the artisan himself or a comrade.
The inclusion of the Imperial eagle and flags suggests strong nationalist sentiment and a desire to dignify the decoration within. These cases were deeply personal items and rarely survive in such complete condition.
Display Suggestions:
Ideal for displaying an original EK2, Hindenburg Cross, or similar WWI award. It adds powerful storytelling context to any medal grouping, or stands alone as a poignant example of front-line craftsmanship.
