This is a charming and poignant WWI-era German locket fashioned in the form of the 1914 Iron Cross, one of Imperial Germany’s most iconic symbols. The obverse is finely engraved with the crowned “W” cypher of Kaiser Wilhelm II above the date “1914,” replicating the design of the actual medal awarded for bravery in the field.
The locket opens to reveal two period photographic portraits—a young man in formal dress (very likely a soldier before or after service), and a young woman in contemporary attire, perhaps his sweetheart or wife. These lockets were often treasured keepsakes carried by soldiers at the front or worn by loved ones at home as a symbol of devotion and sacrifice.
The reverse is plain and unadorned, showing natural age toning and patina consistent with its wartime manufacture. The suspension loop remains intact, allowing it to be worn on a chain or ribbon.
Condition: The locket opens and closes properly, with wear and tarnish from age but no structural damage. The internal photographs are well-preserved, showing only light surface spotting. Overall, a moving personal relic of the Great War that connects the military symbol of honor with the intimate, human side of service.
Historical Note: Such lockets were never official issue but were popular private-purchase items sold by jewelers, often in silver or plated finishes. They represent the blending of patriotic symbolism with private remembrance, making them highly collectible today.
