This is an original World War I-era German Sanke postcard, numbered 514, featuring Leutnant Klein, identified at the top of the card as "Unser erfolgreicher Kampfflieger" (Our successful combat pilot). Klein is shown in uniform wearing both the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Pilot’s Badge, clearly visible on his tunic.
This postcard was produced by Postkartenvertrieb W. Sanke, Berlin N.27, a well-known publisher of aviation-themed postcards during the Great War. The card's face is clearly marked with the publisher and card number.
This example is autographed across the front in two distinct handwritings, with the more prominent signature reading “H. Klein” in dark ink. The second, fainter signature is partially legible and positioned below the first, possibly a dedication or secondary name. The handwriting extends over the uniform portion of the image. Due to age and ink fading, part of the secondary inscription is more difficult to decipher, though visible under inspection.
The card remains in excellent condition with sharp image quality and strong contrast. The reverse side is unused, featuring the standard red printed address lines and stamp box.
Condition:
-
Front: Very fine with clear printing and legible inscriptions
-
Back: Clean, unused
-
Corners: Minor age rounding, no creases
-
Ink: One bold, one faint signature—both original
Display Suggestions:
An ideal candidate for archival framing, especially alongside other Imperial German aviation relics. This signed Sanke card adds value to any collection of WWI flying aces or German Luftstreitkräfte memorabilia.
Collector Appeal:
Sanke cards remain one of the most iconic visual legacies of Imperial German aviation. This autographed example, linked to a decorated pilot, is especially desirable for collectors focusing on aerial warfare, military autographs, or German WWI ephemera.
